Residue is a record of how the fire burned
What ends up on your walls is determined by three things: what was burning, how much oxygen it had, and how hot it got. A fast, hot, oxygen-rich fire burns fuel close to completely and leaves a fine dry ash-like powder. A slow, smothered, oxygen-starved fire leaves large quantities of unburned material as a sticky tar. Cooking oils and animal fats produce something different again: an almost invisible film with a smell out of all proportion to its visibility.
Two physical effects then decide where it lands. Hot particles migrate toward cooler surfaces, which is why soot concentrates on exterior walls, on nail heads and framing members that telegraph through drywall, and around the cool perimeter of a room. And charged particles are attracted to charged surfaces, which is why screens, plastics and synthetic upholstery blacken faster than the wall behind them.

Dry smoke
Produced by fast-burning, well-ventilated fires in cellulose materials — paper, wood, natural textiles. The residue is a fine, dry, grey-to-black powder that sits loosely on surfaces and packs into cracks, grout lines, and the tops of door casings. It smells like a campfire that will not go out. Its weakness is that it is small and dry, so it travels far and buries itself in porous material, but its virtue is that it lifts cleanly with dry methods: HEPA vacuuming without contact, then chemical sponge or dry-sponge work in one direction. Introduce water and it becomes a stain.
Wet smoke
Produced by slow, smoldering, low-oxygen fires in synthetics: plastics, rubber, foam, vinyl, laminate. The residue is thick, dark and sticky, and it smears the moment it is touched. It is also what produces the strands of black soot in ceiling corners that look like cobwebs — soot tags formed where smoke swirls around a fixed point. The odor is pungent and chemical. Cleaning requires solvent-based agents, mechanical agitation and dwell time, and it commonly takes more than one pass. Wet smoke is where DIY attempts most often end in permanently smeared finishes.
Protein residue
The kitchen fire that never really flamed. Meat or oil left on a burner produces almost no visible soot but coats the entire room, and then the entire house, in a thin yellow-to-amber varnish. You notice it because white cabinet doors go dull and yellow, the ceiling discolours around the range, and the smell — rancid, greasy, unmistakable — intensifies whenever the house warms up. It attacks paint, varnish, plastics and aluminium trim. It needs alkaline or enzymatic degreasers with real dwell time, and deodorization is not optional afterward.
Fuel and oil soot from a puffback
A puffback is a misfire in fuel-burning equipment that blows unburned combustion products back through the system. Oil-fired boilers are the classic source and are rare in Southern Arizona, but gas-fired equipment misfires and generator exhaust events produce residue that behaves the same way: a black, oily film with a strong petroleum odor, distributed through the ductwork rather than radiating from one room. Textiles and ceilings take the worst of it, and the duct system is always part of the scope.
Why the chemistry has to change
Soot residues are generally acidic and continue to etch metals, glazes and finishes for as long as they sit, which is why time matters. But the cleaning agent is chosen against two variables, not one: the residue and the substrate underneath it.
- Dry residue must be removed dry first. Water hydrates the particles and turns a removable powder into a bonded smear.
- Wet residue is essentially a tar and needs a solvent to dissolve it, plus agitation and dwell time so the agent can work before it is wiped away.
- Protein film needs an alkaline or enzymatic degreaser and patience — a quick wipe redistributes it rather than removing it.
- Oily fuel soot needs specialty solvents plus mechanical duct cleaning, because the distribution path is the ductwork itself.
Every method is tested first in an inconspicuous area, because the wrong agent on the wrong substrate causes its own damage: alkaline products on aluminium, solvents on some plastics and finishes, water on unsealed wood or plaster.
